As a result, many patient’s experience improvements in a variety of conditions in addition to musculoskeletal complaints.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, light-touch healing modality that helps balance the nervous system and restore health and vitality to the body. During a session the client remains fully clothed and receives the treatment on a massage/bodywork table. Through a series of light-touch hands-on holds at various areas of the body, the practitioner provides a neutral listening presence that supports the client’s body in reorienting towards health. The practitioner listens to the tissues and fluids within the body and helps the client locate areas of the body that are under-resourced as well as areas that express health. Through witnessing and acknowledging tension, compression, or pain, combined with an appreciation of potency and vitality, bodies are capable of shifting, reorganizing, and releasing tension and trauma. The work aims to increase overall wellness, integration, and reconnect with wholeness.

Acupuncture, one of the main forms of therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been practiced for at least 2,500 years. In acupuncture, certain points on the body associated with energy channels or “meridians” are stimulated by the insertion of super fine needles, that range from 0.12mm to 0.30mm. If compared to a normal hypodermic needle at 29mm, acupuncture needles are barely felt at all. The points can be needled between 15 and 90 degrees relative to the skin’s surface, depending on treatment.

Acupuncture restores health by removing energy imbalances and blockages in the body. TCM practitioners work with the vital force or energy called Qi. (pronounced “chee”) It flows throughout the body between the skin and the internal organs, and along channels or pathways called meridians. Qi regulates the spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical harmony of the body by keeping the forces of yin and yang in balance. Yang is a principle of heat, activity, brightness, outwardness, while yin represents coldness, passivity, darkness, interiority, etc. TCM does not try to eliminate either yin or yang, but to keep them in harmonious balance.

The overall experience for those receiving acupuncture treatments can vary greatly. Most report feeling very relaxed during the treatment and many fall asleep. Some find the treatments to be very invigorating and energizing. Almost all report decreased stress and improved well-being. Interestingly, it is rare that a patient reports overall discomfort or pain associated with the treatments, even if they went in with a good deal of concern or fear over the idea of needling. Whatever the case, it is worth looking into further if you are interested in this traditional form of healing. Call or email today for a free informational consult with one of our acupuncturists.

This service is bookable online!

Zen Shiatsu is a hands-on bodywork treatment that implements Eastern holistic philosophies using a trio of stretch, breath and pressure. Pressure is applied along the body’s meridian channels to improve flow and circulation along the energy, blood and lymphatic systems.

During a session, Five Element Theory of Traditional (East Asian) Chinese Medicine is utilized as an assessment tool demonstrating how all aspects of human life – i.e., movement, diet, emotions – are interconnected. Five Element philosophy organizes all natural phenomena into five groups — wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. An imbalance in one or more of these elements can give rise to physical, mental and/or emotional challenges. Five Element Theory shows how the structures and systems of the body are connected to each other and how they relate to the environment and the natural world.

Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure” and was derived from the ancient principles of Acupuncture. It was then applied to the traditional form of Japanese massage called Anma developed in the 1300s. The history of a more modern form of Shiatsu was developed by Tokujiro Namikoshi in the 1920s. Created by Shizuto Masunaga in the 1950s, Zen Shiatsu sports a more dynamic model, adding his understanding of physiology, psychology, and self-care to the foundations of East Asian medicine.

A Zen Shiatsu treatment is given on a floor mat or low table. Unlike many forms of bodywork, Zen Shiatsu rarely uses any oils or lotions. The form is performed fully clothed and it is recommended that clients wear something loose-fitting and comfortable.

Zen Shiatsu is about giving support to the entire system while encouraging natural change in emotional balance and mind/body connection. By loosening blockages and promoting flow of energy, Zen Shiatsu can alleviate symptoms and help restore health and wellbeing.

There are a number of potential short and long-term benefits of Zen Shiatsu including reduction of pain, headaches, and back discomfort. It can assist with healthy elimination, strengthen the immune system and may improve the quality of sleep. It can also maintain vitality by increasing flexibility, furthering healthy transitions throughout pregnancy, and easing emotionally charged stress by lifting the mood and calming the mind.

In a Zen Shiatsu session at SuNu, one can first expect a full TCM-based Five Element intake process followed by hands-on bodywork for general energy balancing along with invitations for lifestyle change. Each intake is individually designed to best suit the needs of the client. An intake involves discussion and discovery, as well as hands-on bodywork. Follow-up sessions reflect a deeper and more customized treatment of imbalances and often result in more pronounced physical, emotional, and mental health benefits.

Reiki is a safe, non-intrusive hands-on healing technique for physical ailments, but it is much more than a physical therapy. It is a holistic system for balancing, healing and harmonizing all aspects of the person – body, mind, emotions and spirit – and it can also be used to encourage personal and spiritual awareness and growth.

Reiki is “holistic” because it affects the whole person – body, mind and spirit – encouraging deep relaxation and a sense of well-being, and assisting the physical body’s own healing ability to operate more effectively and efficiently.

Reiki balances and heals on four levels:

Physical: the physical body and any pain or illness
Emotional: what you are feeling and experiencing
Mental: thoughts and attitudes
Spiritual: your capacity to love yourself and others unconditionally

Holistic health is an approach to treating a person’s well being by taking into consideration all aspects of life. A long term course of action includes emotional and spiritual health along with the physical body. Modern traditional medicine tends to focus on treating symptoms rather than finding the root cause. If a person is experiencing a symptom or chronic condition, the problem has most likely been developing for some time. The goal of integrative nutrition is to facilitate a health recovery plan as well as build a strong foundation for long term optimum health. Sunu’s Kristin Elam can work with you to design a personalized program to help to recover and protect your health, prevent allergic reactions and alleviate symptoms of many disorders.

June is a licensed Massage Therapist offering bodywork services such as Personal Injury, Swedish, Sports, Myofascial Release, and Deep Tissue massage. She also draws from her training and interest in lymphatic drainage techniques, integrated craniosacral, chakra balancing, and reiki for a thoroughly intuitive as well as clinical approach to bodywork.

When working with June, you can expect . . . the unexpected! She takes a new approach in every session, including with clients she’s seen multiple times. “After doing a full history and listening in depth to my client’s areas of discomfort or things they’d like to work on, I enjoy doing a slow warm up in order to bring areas of tension and pain to the surface. From there, I like to address that pain by listening to the muscle response, paying attention to how it moves and releases, and apply pressure within the scope of comfort for my client. It should feel productive, not painful!” With her intuitive, precise, curious and innovative style of bodywork, June is a favorite practitioner for those with lingering pain from post op procedures, nerve issues, chronic neck and back tension, people experiencing extremity numbness, anyone working through injury, ergonomic concerns, chronic pain and more.

At SuNu, June is inspired by the collaborative approach to holistic health care. She enjoys being able to work with practitioners who specialize in other modalities in order to offer well-rounded and full-bodied care to her clients. She’s also happy to be working more with prenatal and postpartum birth clients at SuNu.

Dr. Courtney is one of the pediatric and prenatal chiropractors at SuNu. She specializes in care surrounding tongue and lip ties by utilizing a combination of chiropractic adjustments and craniosacral therapy. For most of her life, Dr. Courtney intended to be a pediatrician, but while in college at the University of Tampa, she heard an amazing testimonial about the healing power of chiropractic care for children. After further researching the subject, she realized that the body is capable of healing itself once proper spinal alignment is restored. This made her change her focus entirely, and she began pursuing a career as a pediatric chiropractor, rather than one in pediatric medicine.

After receiving her undergraduate degree, Dr. Courtney attended Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, MN where she received her Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2016. She has received additional pediatric focused training from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). Dr. Courtney also discovered a passion for women’s health and providing prenatal care during her own pregnancy. She began learning about tongue and lip ties prior to having her daughter, Rowan. It was not until Rowan was born with significant ties that Dr. Courtney recognized how truly impactful care for infants and children with these can be.

Dr. Courtney grew up in Maple Grove, and currently lives in Minnetonka with her family and pets. When not at the clinic, she enjoys spending time with her daughter, Rowan and fiancé, Trevor, reading, and going to her family’s lake house on Big Birch Lake.

Alex Kewitt (she/they) is a bodyworker, facilitator, artist, and youth worker. Alex has nine years of experience working within the field of Human Services in a variety of roles including supervising homecare services for adults with chronic illnesses and disabilities, providing case management and advocacy to folks living in low income public housing, and working at an emergency shelter for youth and conducting outreach to minor youth experiencing homelessness. She found herself drawn to study BCST while receiving sessions of her own throughout that time and is now a graduate of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy program with Body Intelligence.

She appreciated the dynamic, collaborative and creative nature of the work, as well as its grounding in anatomy and physiology. Alex noticed how BCST empowered new ways to relate to her body, her mental health and trauma history, and supported her in accessing increased health, resiliency and resources within herself. Alex’s bodywork practice combines skills learned working within human services as well as her art and movement background.

When working with Alex, one can expect care that comes with a trauma informed lens. In her own words, Alex says, “consent is really important to me, especially around touch. I appreciate a good mix of silence/stillness, as well as dialoguing with clients during sessions to hear what’s emerging for them. I tend to use humor, irreverence, playfulness in my work as well.”.

Anyone can benefit from BCST. This modality is really gentle and subtle, but can have profound positive impacts. It’s a good way for folks to pause, rest, process and digest. BCST helps to reconnect with the body’s resiliency, self-regulating capacities and reorient towards one’s overall wholeness. This work is really supportive when recovering from illness, injury, surgeries. It’s good for treating anxiety, depression, sleep issues and generally calming the nervous system. It’s great for pregnancy and post birth support, tinnitus and TMJ issues, acute and chronic pain and helping resolve prest trauma held in the body.

Alex is Queer, a parent, and of European descent. She is committed to continually engaging in embodied, antiracist work of unlearning and dismantling harmful patterns around whiteness, as well as tending to her cisgendered & able-bodied privilege. With this, she feels it’s vital to deepen her awareness of the impacts of oppression on bodies and communities, while holding an abundant hope towards healing and liberation for all.

Alex is excited to offer her services to the SuNu community and looks forward to working more with her Queer community, specifically. She prioritizes and encourages Trans folks needing support and care around transitioning to seek her services and is also excited to work with folks who are pregnant/needing postpartum care and chest/breastfeeding. Alex currently lives on occupied Dakota and Anishinaabe land, in Minneapolis, MN. She is a parent of a toddler and has two cats. She loves reading, dancing, biking, performance art, poetry and food.

Mary is also a certified practitioner of Watsu (Water Shiatsu), Aquatic Integration and Reiki, all of which inform her practice. Mary credits her land and water masters, Shinzo Fujimaki and Cameron West for their expertise and dedication to her professional development as a conduit of hands-on healing.

Mary uses her knowledge and passion for Five-Element theory to provide a very comprehensive treatment. The elements utilized in Five Element- based Shiatsu practice are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. As in a fingerprint, we each possess a unique combination of these energies, causing us to think, feel, and behave in certain ways. This affects us in both physical and psychological realms. One of the goals of Shiatsu is to balance these energies so that one does not ‘overly’ support or control another, promoting a more harmonious relationship with ourselves and our environment.

Rachael is a Level II Usui Reiki Practitioner offering services at our both Sunu locations. She is passionate about growth, self-awareness, deepening love, and intentional, conscious living. She brings that passion to her practice in order to create a unique and personalized experience for every client. Her education and experience have given her the necessary tools and wisdom to treat a wide variety of issues.

Rachael has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology, is a Level 2 Usui Reiki Practitioner and is a certified Institute of Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, & NBC-HWC Board Certified Health Coach.

Reiki is a non-invasive type of energy healing. It’s based around the belief that energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or even emotional pain. In time, these energy blocks can cause illness. Reiki aims to help the flow of energy and remove blocks. Practitioners believe that Reiki can improve the flow of energy around and within the body and enable relaxation, relieve pain, speed healing and reduce symptoms of illness.

While Reiki is non-invasive, it is not without sensation. Moving energy can create a beautiful, peaceful experience, but it can also cause discomfort, vulnerability and emotional discovery. Clients should be ready for both. Rachael is eager to support the experience each client has and walk with them on their journey. “This work is so individualized. It’s different every time, with every client. And it’s meant to be that way because we are all unique. What we need, what we discover, who we are is our own. So a one-size-fits-all treatment can’t yield lasting results. That’s one of the things I find most fascinating about Reiki and energy work - it works for you, not the other way around.”

A session with Rachael will be an intentional experience. She and SuNu offer a safe space for release. Clients may experience crying, laughing, sensations, imagery, colors, etc. Rachael’s main goal is to hold space for clients and allow them to identify and feel into whatever they are working through or processing at that time. She invites clients to encourage (self) awareness, lean into more intentional living and cultivate stronger connections between mind, body and soul.

When Rachael isn’t at SuNu you’ll probably find her in the kitchen. “I love, love, love to cook - it is one of my favorite ways to express my creativity.” She also loves the outdoors and fresh air - “windows are open in my house year round (even if it’s just a crack”). Rachael says, “I firmly believe that Reiki and Breathwork have both saved and changed my life. I am thrilled to be offering and introducing Reiki to SuNu and the entire community.”

She first developed an interest for massage at a young age by simply giving her mom massages at home to help her relax after a long day of work and being a single mom of three daughters. Tichelle offers deep tissue, trigger point release, Swedish massage, prenatal, sports massage, foot reflexology. She loves working specifically on neck/shoulder pain, headaches, piriformis/leg pain, glutes and hands/feet. At SuNu, she’s really enjoyed working more with prenatal clients and helping them to find relief and experience real-time changes in their bodies. Tichelle uses intuition, body knowledge, awareness and gentle connection to create a safe, calming and receptive massage experience for everyone she works with. “I like to think of myself as a “body listener” – I am able to learn a lot from the client’s body without having too much chatter or verbal storytelling getting in the way of what the body actually needs.”

One word that aptly describes Adrienne’s work is thorough. She incorporates multiple modalities and has a skillset with which to draw from, to provide her clients with an exceptional experience and desired results. WIth her background in birth work and women’s health, she is a valuable resource for prenatal, postpartum clients, and, really, anyone at any stage of the birthing journey. She also enjoys working with her postpartum patients and their babies, offering pediatric CST services and beyond.

Another area of interest and/or specialty for Adrienne is assisting clients struggling with anxiety, mental and physical transitions and other mental and/or energetic blockages. She leaves no stone left unturned and pulls out all the stops in order to meet her client’s needs. She listens and uses her intuition to collect helpful data in order to determine the most effective and supportive treatment plan which she designs specifically for each individual. She’s able to offer additional support through fire cupping, moxibustion, herbs and more. Adrienne believes that acupuncture helps nourish the body for optimal performance. So people who would benefit from working with her are those who wish to feel their optimal selves.

SuNu has been pursuing Adrienne because of her reputation as a provider, our like-minded approach to holistic health(care), and also because of our shared network. We are thrilled to have Adrienne officially on the team.

When Adrienne isn’t working, she’s often focusing on self care or spending time with family. One thing she loves to do is travel. Her latest traveling adventure included a spur of the moment stand-up paddleboard yoga class in San Diego!
